Many of you have responded to my previous email expressing your willingness to help with the Melody Lane Co-op or to start something similar in your area. I am eager to talk to each of you as soon as I can. You are welcome to stop by this afternoon/evening during co-op pick up (between 3:00pm – 5:00pm is the best time) and I will be happy to discuss how everything works and answer any questions you have. If I don’t see you today then I will be responding to emails and phone calls tomorrow during the day.

GREEN PASTURE ORDERS:
Anyone that has ordered Green Pasture Cod Liver Oil or Butter Oil from me and has not gotten it yet, I have it here for you. You can stop by today or just let me know when you would like to come.

FREE TOMATO PLANTS:
I have a ton of tomato plants in my garden right now if anyone wants them. Just bring a small shovel and a pot or other container to take them home in and they are all yours. I didn’t plant them this year. They just sprung up on their own from whatever tomatoes were dropped last year. Completely organic. I don’t use any fertilizer or pesticide in my yard or garden. These are most likely Beefsteak, but could also be Roma or Cherry tomatoes. That is what I had growing last year. You are welcome to just stop by this afternoon or email me to set up another time to come.

June 11, 2013 - Important News, Please Read!

The Market is open every week from Saturday morning until Tuesday evening.
Place your order by 7:00pm Tuesday for pick up the following Thursday.

CO-OP NEWS

You may have noticed the co-op emails have been shorter lately and are coming out later and later each week. It is becoming obvious to me, and especially to my family, that I just have too many things on my plate at the moment. The load will not be getting any lighter as we prepare to start homeschooling “for real” with 1st grade in the fall. I also have some other personal goals I am working towards that deserve my full attention.

So, after careful consideration, I have decided I cannot continue to host the Melody Lane Co-op at my house every week. We will finish out the month of June on the normal schedule with pick-ups every Thursday until June 27. After that I am considering going to a once-a-month schedule. Moss Hill Farm vegetable CSA members can continue picking up at my house through the end of the Summer season and we can discuss Fall and Winter as they approach.

A lot of work has gone into the Melody Lane Co-op to get it where it is today and I would hate to see it shut down completely. I think we have proven that there is a need for this kind of thing in our community. I personally just don’t have the time right now to keep it going. If anyone is interested in taking over the co-op or starting something similar please let me know. I will be happy to help you get started and share with you everything I have learned over the past couple years. This is the perfect opportunity for a stay at home mom (or anyone with a few extra hours per week) to help offset their family food budget and get involved in the local food community. If you are business minded and have more time to invest, I believe it has the potential to grow into a sustainable business.

This was a difficult decision for me but it is what is best for my family. Thank you for understanding. I still plan to remain as active as I can in the local food community, especially with Weston A. Price Foundation events so please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have.

Happy Memorial Day

Good morning. The Melody Lane Co-op Market is now open. Sorry for the delay. I have been without Internet service since I left on Friday so I was not able to activate it Saturday morning as usual.

The Green Pasture order deadline is Tuesday evening (cod liver oil, butter oil, and coconut oil). Be sure to check out the GROUP BUYS section in the category listing along the left hand side of The Market.

Have a great rest of the weekend,

Sandra

The Market is open every week from Saturday morning until Tuesday evening.
Place your order by 7:00pm Tuesday for pick up the following Thursday.

CO-OP NEWS

Sorry I have been shirking my responsibilities as Co-op Coordinator this week. My family has been busy from sun up til sun down these past few days. I usually try to catch up on emails and co-op business in the evenings after the kids go to bed but lately I’ve just been too worn out from all of our running around. I apologize for not getting back to those of you that have sent emails or left voice messages. I will answer you as soon as I get caught up.

Don’t forget to place your co-op order by 7:00pm this evening!

Last call for summer vegetable shares…

The Moss Hill Farm Summer Vegetable CSA starts this week and runs for 12 week. Today is the last possible day to sign up so if you are interested you need to call me or Floyd ASAP. You can read all the details here. If you are getting sick of the leafy green vegetables from the Spring share, don’t worry. The summer CSA season has the most variety. You can see a picture of one of our summer shares from last year. Unfortunately, it does not look like I will have any extra shares to sell week-to-week this season, so the only way to get Moss Hill Farm veggies is by signing up now and paying in advance.

Just in time for Memorial Day Weekend…

This Thursday before co-op pickup we are making natural sunscreen and essential oil bug repellent. Brandon Follett, owner of From Mimi’s Mountain Home, will be here with the ingredients and recipes from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. You are welcome to stop in and bring the kids. Invite a friend if you want. There is no charge to participate, just pay (wholesale prices) for whatever supplies you use. If you can’t come and make your own this week, Brandon will have sunscreen and bug spray for sale in The Market at regular price starting next week.

Grilling season is here, time to stock up on meat…

Please welcome Joyful Noise Acres back to the co-op. We have bought from them in the past and even took a group tour of their farm last year. What a beautiful place they have! It really lives up to it’s name with happy animals living on lush pasture. Go check out their listings for pasture raised chicken and pork. You will find them in The Market under the MEAT & POULTRY category. You can even save a few bucks with a meat box. Joyful Noise Acres now has a large box with various cuts of chicken and pork, a total of 12-14 lbs for only $70. I’ve ordered a box for myself to take camping this weekend.

Speaking of camping… While I normally open my house and yard to visitors all day Thursday during co-op pick, we won’t be able to visit very long this week. You are welcome to come hang out early in the day while we are making sunscreen and bug spray but after about 4:00pm I need to focus on making dinner and packing for our trip. If you are picking up after 4:00pm please just help yourself. Knock on the door if you have any questions and I will be happy to help.

Place your order by 7:00pm Tuesday for pick up the following Thursday.

CO-OP NEWS

I hope everyone had a happy and relaxing Mothers’ Day weekend. Don’t forget to place your co-op order by 7:00pm tonight.

New Farm
We welcome a new farm to the Melody Lane Co-op this week. BeeBerry Farms is a Certifed Naturally Grown farm located in Cumming, Ga. Read more about what Certified Naturally Grown means here and visit their facebook page to see some pictures from the farm. You will find their eggs, honey, and soap listed in The Market this week and more products including berries and fruits when they become available later this summer.

Reserve your summer vegetable share now…
This is the last week of the spring vegetable CSA from Moss Hill Farm. The summer CSA session starts on May 23rd. Don’t miss out on these beautiful, fresh veggies. Reserve your share today. Read all the details about how the CSA works and sign up here. You are welcome to stop by my house this Thursday after 3:00pm to get a preview of what a vegetable share looks like. Also, I just checked and there is still one extra vegetable share availabe in The Market this week for only $40. Go get it before someone else does!

Bulk Coffee
JavaGenesis Coffee Roasting is now offering 5 pounds of whole bean coffee for just $55. This is a great deal on fresh, locally roasted specialty coffee! Split it with a friend or it can be stored in an airtight container and used over a few weeks. Juanice Christian from JavaGenesis will be at my house this Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 sharing some samples of their coffee so you can ‘try before you buy’ and ask her any questions about the coffee roasting process. Even if you have not orderd anything this week you are welcome to stop by.

Updated delivery schedule on select items…
Starting June 6th, products from Good Shepherd Herbals and milk from Father’s Bounty Farm will only be available every other week. You can read more details and check exact dates here.

GROUP BUYS

Green Pasture
I have several bottles of Cod Liver Oil and Butter Oil on hand, available for pick up this week. You will find them listed in The Market under the category COD LIVER OIL. Next week I will start taking orders for another group order.

Other Items
Whenever I (or some other members of the co-op) see a good deal on a hard to find product we will often go ahead and buy a whole case to share with the co-op. A few things listed in The Market now are Coconut Cream Concentrate from Tropical Traditions (under COCONUT PRODUCTS), Unflavored Gelatin Powder from Great Lakes (under SUPPLEMENTS), and Smoked Sea Salt from The Spice Lab (under SALT). Since these are all things I use in my kitchen on a regular basis, I will be happy to let you sample any of these items and can share a few recipes or recommended uses. All you have to do is ask!

Wilderness Family Naturals is a great source for coconut oil. They offer three different grades in several different sizes. All are certified organic. Deciding which one to buy can get a little confusing so I have listed a brief description of each below. You can also visit their website for more detailed information.

Centrifuge Extracted Coconut Oil
Smooth with a light coconut flavor that is a true delicacy. It will readily melt in your mouth and this is a favorite coconut oil for those who eat it right off the spoon. Made from freshly pressed coconut milk, chilled and separated by centrifugal force, this coconut oil remains raw. It is an absolutely pure and fabulous organic coconut oil.

- 16oz glass – $16.96 ($1.06/oz)
- 32oz glass – $22.96 ($0.72/oz)
- 64oz glass – $41.95 ($0.66/oz)
- 1 gal plastic – $64.95 ($0.51/oz)

Cold Pressed Coconut Oil

Made from fresh, low temperature dried coconut flakes, this coconut oil has a stronger coconut flavor and minute traces of the soluble constituents extracted from the dried coconut meat. Like our Centrifuged Virgin Coconut Oil, this Cold Pressed oil remains raw throughout the process. This oil comes from a family farm on a small island in the Philippines where it is barged to a larger island with an international port. Because the recovery of coconut oil made with this method is better, the costs are slightly less. This is why cold pressed virgin coconut oil is priced lower than centrifuged virgin coconut oil.

- 16oz glass – $9.95 ($0.62/oz)
- 32oz glass – $16.95 ($0.53/oz)
- 64oz glass – $31.20 ($0.49/oz)
- 1 gal plastic – $46.00 ($0.36/oz)

Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil
Expeller-Pressed Coconut Oil as an economical choice for cooking. This oil is mechanically expressed without the use of solvents or chemicals of any kind. It is an excellent quality food-grade coconut oil that is not hydrogenated and contains no trans fatty acids. This ultra-clean coconut oil has a neutral flavor yet contains the same medium-chain fatty acids as virgin coconut oil. The one gallon, food-grade plastic bucket is resistant to leaking or leaching and seals well. This is the most economical size for the average family that uses coconut oil for most of their cooking needs.

- 16oz glass – $8.95 ($.56/oz)
- 32oz glass – $14.50 ($0.43/oz)
- 64oz glass – not available
- 1 gal plastic – $38.00 ($0.30/oz)

CO-OP NEWS

Cinnamon Tingle       Moss Hill Farm

Good evening. I would usually be closing The Market right about now but I just noticed that Green Pasture has their Cinnamon Tingle flavored Butter Oil / Cod Liver Oil Blend back in stock. This is a popular flavor so I will keep The Market open a few more hours in case anyone wants to get a last minute order in. Green Pasture products are listed in The Market under the category GROUP BUYS. Payment is due by Thursday, April 18 and we expect delivery by Thursday, April 25. You can read all the details for this group order here.

I also noticed that no one bought the extra vegetable basket from Moss Hill Farm. It is listed in The Market under the category FRESH & LOCAL and I just reduced the price to $39. This is a great deal for fresh picked, organically grown vegetables. It’s hard to say exactly what all will be included but this is what we got last week, so it should be similar:

  • 2 varieties of lettuce
  • 1 head choi
  • 1 head mustard greens
  • 1 kohlrabi with greens
  • 1 bunch spring onions
  • 1 bunch swiss chard
  • 1 bunch radishes
If you would like to get fresh veggies all summer you can reserve your spot in the Moss Hill Farm CSA and save even more per week, read more details here.

See you on Thursday :)

The Market is open every week from Saturday morning until Tuesday evening.
Place your order by 7:00pm Tuesday for pick up the following Thursday.

CO-OP NEWS

Welcome to all the new members of the co-op! We’ve had quite a few people join the co-op website in the last couple of weeks so let me give a quick explanation of how ordering through The Market works. The Market is divided into two categories – FRESH & LOCAL and GROUP BUYS. Since our focus is to help people get to know where their food comes from, we have chosen to organize the categories by farm or producer name rather than by item type. Below you will find a list of each of the producers and a brief description of what they have to offer.

FRESH & LOCAL items are grown or produced locally and are generally available every week. You order by 7:00pm on Tuesday and you can pick it up between 3:00pm and 7:00pm on Thursday.

GROUP BUYS change from week to week. These are orders that we place as a group so that we can get a better price. Payment is due the week you place the order but these items may not be available for pick up until a week or two later.

Some more tips for using The Market:
  • You must be signed in to order.
  • You may see Featured Products and What’s New near the top of the page. Scroll down to see the full descriptions.
  • Narrow down what items are displayed on The Market page by clicking the categories along the left side if the page.
  • You can search The Market for specific key words but the search box is only available when you are in the category All Products.
  • Add items to your cart by clicking the small shopping cart icon at the bottom right of each listing.
  • Your shopping cart will always be at the top left of The Market page.
  • During checkout you will have a chance to change quantities, remove items, or add comments.

If you ever have any problems you can call or email Sandra (contact info at the bottome of this email).

Looking for goat milk? We have an opportunity to start getting raw goat milk (for pet consumption, of course). There are already a couple of half gallons listed in the market by Father’s Bounty Farm if you would like to try it out. Another goat farmer has offered to deliver to us as well but would require a minimum of 10 gallons a week to make it worth her time. If you think you might be interested in getting goat milk on a regular basis please send me an email to let me know. I am trying to gauge interest to decide if we should pursue this any further.

Fresh Vegetables! Again, we have one extra share of vegetables from Moss Hill Farm available this week. First person to add it to their cart and check out will get it. The rest of the vegetable shares have been reserved and pre-paid as part of Moss Hill Farm’s CSA program. The next season starts in just a few weeks. Reserve your spot now to make sure you have fresh, locally grown veggies all summer. You can read all the details here.

Extra Jars? Do you have empty mason jars hanging around your house taking up valuable storage space in your kitchen? I will be happy to take any unwanted jars off your hands and put them to good use. You can just drop them off when you are here picking up your co-op order.

The co-op needs your support. The Melody Lane Co-op is run entirely by volunteers who donate their own time and resources. Membership fees help pay for office supplies, web hosting, and credit card processing. Occasionally we will ask for donations to cover the cost of supplies for specific workshops or events. Now there is a new way to support the co-op. You can donate money to the co-op every time you shop online. Just click this affiliate link to take you to www.amazon.com and then shop like normal. There is no additional cost to you but the co-op will receive a small commission on everything you order.

I look forward to seeing everyone this week :)
