New Farm - Order Your Fresh Eggs Now!

CO-OP NEWS

Greetings from Sandra at Melody Lane Co-Op. I can’t believe it’s been over a year since our last group order. A lot has changed in that time!

I started the co-op in 2011 as part of my quest for healthy food. The best way to make it affordable was to bring many families together to share in the cost of supporting local agriculture. While running the co-op I realized that my true calling was not to be the middle man. I wanted to be the source of good food rather than just a distributor. I decided to take a break from organizing group orders so that I could work towards my goal of owning my own farm. My sister also has a passion for this way of life so together we found a piece of land in Ball Ground, GA to become our farm. She lives at the farm and manages daily chores. I am at the farm several days a week but I still live in Roswell and can offer my home as a pick up location for our products.

This year we will have pasture-raised, soy-free, non-GMO eggs, chicken, and rabbit… but we need your help to get started. We have decided to use a CSA model to get our laying flock established and are now taking pre-orders for eggs. For more details and to sign up please visit this website.

We are starting out small but we are working towards being able to offer goat milk, pork, and honey as well. Follow us on Facebook for photos and updates on our progress.

Here is a short video showing the farm and explaining what we have been up to.

We look forward to providing our community with fresh local food.

December Events

CO-OP NEWS

There is a lot going on this month so this email is a bit longer than normal. I would hate for you to miss anything! Please try to make it all the way to the end.

GREEN PASTURE and WILDERNESS FAMILY NATURALS
Our Green Pasture order is due to arrive today. Unfortunatley, due to delays from the Thanksgiving Holiday, our Wilderness Family Naturals order has not shipped yet. I called yesterday to check on it and they expect it to go out today or Monday. If you placed an order, I will contact you as soon as it arrives.

REAL FOOD FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Our monthly Weston A. Price Meeting is tomorrow, December 7th, 7:00pm at my home in Roswell. I hope you can join us as we discuss our own strategies to deal with the not-so-healthy holiday foods all around us and share some good recipes. Details and RSVP here. If you ordered Green Pasture products they will be available for pick up at the meeting.

BROAD RIVER PASTURES HOLIDAY BAZAAR ON THE FARMELBERTON, GA
This Sunday, December 8th, I will have a Weston A. Price information table set up at Broad River Pastures Holiday Bazaar. It’s a bit of a drive from Roswell but, as most of you know, I will take any chance I can to visit a new farm :) This farm happens to be owned and run by a fellow WAPF Chapter Leader so I know it’s going to be a good one. If anyone would like to ride along with me and help out at my table I would love the company! Reply to this email if you are interested. Or if you would just like to attend the Bazaar on your own find out more here. This is a great family-friendly event and an opportunity to get some christmas shopping out of they way while supporting local artisans.

ATLANTA REAL FOOD MEETUP GROUP
There are a few other events coming up this month including a meeting about cold & flu prevention and a cultural foods potluck. You can read all about them at the Atlanta Real Food Meetup Group.

EAST WEST FARM
Farmers’ Markets are winding down for the year and fresh veggies are getting harder and harder to find. Fortunatley there is plenty of good meat and poultry available from our local farmers. One farm in particular that you will want to check out is East West Farm in Marietta. They have recently opened up their own online market which is now fully stocked with pork and chicken (among other things). This is not your ordinary meat. Their pork and chicken are truely free range, hormone-free, and supplemented with only organic, GMO-free, soy-free grains. The thing I like most about East West Farm is they are completely transparent in everyhting they do. They encourage their customers to walk around and “inspect” the farm at any time.

If you are looking for the highest quality meat and poultry, East West Farm has it! You order online Saturday through Wednesday and pick up is at the farm on Friday. Go to http://marietta.locallygrown.net to see what they have available and visit www.eastwestfarm.com to find out more about the farm.

MOTHER EARTH MEATS
The next Mother Earth Meats delivery to Roswell is Saturday, December 14th. Order deadline is this Sunday. Details here.

MILLER’S ORGANIC FARM
Miller’s Organic Farm is an Amish farm in Pennysilvania that delivers a wide variety of Weston A. Price foods all over the country including raw milk, raw butter, raw cheeses, fermented vegetables, pastured meats, and soaked nuts. You can read more about them here and be sure to join their email list. They currently have a drop-off in Lawrenceville once a month and they are looking to add another drop-off location in Marietta. I am working with them to find a suitable location that can accomodate a 53 ft semi truck. If you know of any large parking lots, preferrable near I-75, that the owners’ will give us permission to use once a month please let me know. We are hoping to get something set up by next month for a January 5th drop off.

November 16, 2013 - November/December deliveries

CO-OP NEWS

THE WILD SALMON COMPANY
If you ordered salmon throught the co-op or directly from The Wild Salmon Company,

Delivery is tomorrow (Sunday) at 4:00pm.

You are welcome to park in my grass along the side of the driveway or on the street. If you don’t see the big red salmon truck already in the driveway please do not block the driveway. And, of course, do not block any of my neighbors’ driveways (it has happened before). We will be glad to assist you in carrying your salmon boxes to your car if you need help.

THE WESTON A. PRICE FOUNDATION
I had a blast at the Weston A. Price conference last weekend. There was so much information to take in and amazing food to try. For those of you that are not familiar with WAPF, please take a moment to find out more and consider becoming a member. They are dedicated to getting more people in touch with traditional foods through education, research and activism. Did you hear the news last week about the FDA coming one step closer to removing trans-fats from their GRAS (generally recognized as safe) list? The Weston A. Price Foundation had a lot to do with that. And if you enjoy your milk raw, you can also thank the WAPF.

Our next local Weston A. Price meeting will be Saturday, December 7th at 7:00pm in Roswell. We will be discussing Real Food for the Holidays. Details and RSVP here. You do not have to be a member to attend meetings. I hope you can join us!

Everything from The Wild Salmon Company was caught within the last few months by Heidi herself and was filleted and flash-frozen right off the boat. This is the best salmon I have ever tasted. Store-bought doesn’t even compare. Heidi only delivers to the Atlanta area once a year so now is the time to stock up. Go to their website to learn more about The Wild Salmon Company

Delivery is scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, November 17th (exact time TBD)

Order deadline is Thursday, October 31st

- Payment is due when you place your order. Pay online with a credit or debit card.
- Pick up from Sandra’s home in Roswell – 890 Melody Ln, Roswell GA 30075.

These boneless Sockeye portions are super convenient if you are just cooking for one or two people. Each 5-8 oz portion is individually vacuum sealed.

Sockeye fillets are great for families and for entertaining. They make for a beautiful presentation that will impress any guest. Awesome for grilling. These boneless fillets range between 1.25 pounds and 2 pounds each and are individually vacuum sealed.

Pricing for both portions and fillets:
20 lbs = $13.25/ lb. (order here)

GREEN PASTURE
For those of you waiting for your Green Pasture order, I am expecting it to arrive some time this weekend. I will let you know when it is here so you can come pick up. When I went to place our order I noticed that their newest product – Blue Ice Infused Coconut Oil – was on sale so I went ahead and ordered a few extra bottles. Regular price is $55 + shipping. On sale right now for $35. They are posted in The Market. Hurry on over, at this price they won’t last long!

In case you are not familiar with this new product line, here is some more information about it from the Green Pasture website:

Introducing our new line of Blue Ice Infused Coconut oil. Each serving will be 65% min coconut oil, 2+/-ml of Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil, and .5ml +/- of X-Factor Gold High Vitamin Butter oil and / or Blue Ice Skate Liver Oil. Organic Coconut oil makes the Blue Ice and X-Factor oils more digestible and assimilable. Coconut oil is one of the best known carrier oils. It by-passes the liver and assimilates into the blood stream and assists other nutrients along the same path. Great tasting, organic flavors make the oils easier for many to take compared to the straight Blue Ice and X-factor Oils.

Flavors include: Carob Banana, Caramel, Cinnamon, Unflavored

Read the details and RSVP here: http://www.meetup.com/AtlantaRealFood/events/142817312/

THE WILD SALMON COMPANY – Heidi and Steve just got back from Alaska with a fresh load of wild Alaskan salmon they caught over the summer. This is the best salmon I have ever tasted! Even if you are not a fan of fish you will like this salmon. Considered “sushi grade”, it is so fresh there is no fishy smell and it is nice and firm, not soggy like the store-bought stuff that has been in the grocer’s freezer case for who knows how long. Everything from The Wild Salmon Company was caught within the last few months by Heidi herself and was filleted and flash-frozen right off the boat.

Heidi only comes to the Atlanta area once a year. This time it will be Sunday, November 17th to my home in Roswell (890 Melody Ln, Roswell GA 30075). Go to her website to read all the details: http://www.thewildsalmonco.com/wild-sockeye-salmon/

When you order directly from Heidi there is a 10 lb minimum. If you already know that you will want 10 lbs. or more you can go ahead and order from Heidi and choose the Roswell location for your delivery.

For orders less than 10 lbs. The Melody Lane Co-op will do a group order so that we can divide the 10 lb. boxes into smaller portions. I will send out an other email in the next couple weeks with the details.

August 12, 2013 - Green Pasture and Wilderness Family Naturals

CO-OP NEWS

We had a packed house for the cod liver oil meeting this weekend. I might have to find a new place for us to meet if this keeps up!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 13th and we will be discussing fats and oils. You can read all the details and RSVP here: http://www.meetup.com/AtlantaRealFood/events/134296712/

This month we are ordering from Green Pasture again and, by popular request, Wilderness Family Naturals.

Order deadline is August 17th
and payment must be received by the end of that day.
You can pay online with a credit card when you place your order or drop off cash/check at my home by August 17.
(Please make checks payable to Sandra Walker.)
If I am not home when you stop by there is a lock box on the wall next to the refrigerator.

Estimated Delivery Date is September 13th
Pick up from my home in Roswell: 890 Melody Ln, Roswell GA 30075
We expect to have everything by Friday, September 13th for our monthly WAPF meeting.
If you cannot make it to the meeting, contact me to make arrangements to pick up at a different time.

GREEN PASTURE PRODUCTS ~ www.GreenPasture.org

I only have a few bottles left from the meeting the other night – a couple of unflavored cod liver oil liquid ($39), an Oslo orange liquid ($39), and a bottle of capsules ($25). If you are interested in any of those let me know.

Everything else is availabe for pre-order in The Market, EXCEPT Cinnamon Tingle flavored Butter Oil/Cod Liver Oil blend. That seems to be the most popular flavor and Green Pasture has put a limit on how many we can buy in a 30 day period. (We bought 16 as a group on our last order) I’m afraid I won’t be able to order them in time to get them before the next meeting. Of course, you can go to www.greenpasture.org and order up to three bottles for yourself but you will have to pay full price plus shipping.

WILDERNESS FAMILY NATURALS ~ www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com
pantry staples including coconut products, cacao, salad dressings, condiments, salt, beauty products and more

One of my favorite things to get from Wilderness Family Naturals is their Mayonnaise made with olive oil, sesame seed oil, and coconut oil. The olive and the coconut oils are not overpowering, like when I try to make it myself. They have found just the right balance of ingredients to get that perfect mayo taste – without the nasty industrial seed oils and high fructose corn syrup. Looks like all of their single jars are sold out but they do have a case of 12 jars. I am hoping a few of you will want to try it so I don’t get stuck with the whole case… (but maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad thing, I could practically eat this stuff right off the spoon). You will find this Mayo in The Market listed under Wilderness Family Naturals > Condiments/Dressing. Or just use the search box to search for “mayo”.

Another thing Wilderness Family naturals is known for is their high quality coconut oils. They offer three different grades in several different sizes. All are certified organic. Deciding which one to buy can get a little confusing so I have listed a brief description of each below. You can also visit their website for more detailed information.

Centrifuge Extracted Coconut Oil
Smooth with a light coconut flavor that is a true delicacy. It will readily melt in your mouth and this is a favorite coconut oil for those who eat it right off the spoon. Made from freshly pressed coconut milk, chilled and separated by centrifugal force, this coconut oil remains raw. It is an absolutely pure and fabulous organic coconut oil.

- 16oz glass – $16.96 ($1.06/oz)
- 32oz glass – $22.96 ($0.72/oz)
- 64oz glass – $41.95 ($0.66/oz)
- 1 gal plastic – $64.95 ($0.51/oz)

Cold Pressed Coconut Oil

Made from fresh, low temperature dried coconut flakes, this coconut oil has a stronger coconut flavor and minute traces of the soluble constituents extracted from the dried coconut meat. Like our Centrifuged Virgin Coconut Oil, this Cold Pressed oil remains raw throughout the process. This oil comes from a family farm on a small island in the Philippines where it is barged to a larger island with an international port. Because the recovery of coconut oil made with this method is better, the costs are slightly less. This is why cold pressed virgin coconut oil is priced lower than centrifuged virgin coconut oil.

- 16oz glass – $9.95 ($0.62/oz)
- 32oz glass – $16.95 ($0.53/oz)
- 64oz glass – $31.20 ($0.49/oz)
- 1 gal plastic – $46.00 ($0.36/oz)

Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil
Expeller-Pressed Coconut Oil as an economical choice for cooking. This oil is mechanically expressed without the use of solvents or chemicals of any kind. It is an excellent quality food-grade coconut oil that is not hydrogenated and contains no trans fatty acids. This ultra-clean coconut oil has a neutral flavor yet contains the same medium-chain fatty acids as virgin coconut oil. The one gallon, food-grade plastic bucket is resistant to leaking or leaching and seals well. This is the most economical size for the average family that uses coconut oil for most of their cooking needs.

- 16oz glass – $8.95 ($.56/oz)
- 32oz glass – $14.50 ($0.43/oz)
- 64oz glass – not available
- 1 gal plastic – $38.00 ($0.30/oz)

July 8, 2013 - Meeting this Saturday

The next co-op pick up day is Saturday, July 13.
Place your order through The Market by 7:00pm Thursday.

CO-OP NEWS

I hope you will be able to join us for the raw milk discussion this Saturday, July 13th at 7:00pm. All of the details are posted on the Atlanta Real Food Meetup Group. Even if you have plenty of experience with raw milk our conversation is likely to include other real/local food topics you might enjoy. In addition, I will be taking suggestions for future meeting topics and possible bulk orders.

Go to The Market now to place your co-op order for pick up at the meeting on Saturday. If you can’t make it to the meeting and need to come earlier in the day you can, just let me know when to expect you.

Green Pasture Products
(cod liver oil, butter oil, coconut oil, etc.)
I have a few bottles of Green Pasture products for sale – only available to those that come to the meeting – first come, first served. If I don’t have what you need, and for anyone that cannot make it to the meeting, we will be placing another group order next week. Order online through the Melody Lane Co-op Market between July 14 and July 20. You can read all the details here.

Volunteer Opportunity
Do you make your own yogurt? Would you be willing to show a small group of us how you do it? I’m looking for someone to host a yogurt making demonstration some time in the next few weeks. Preferably in the Roswell/North Fulton area of town. You pick the day and the maximum number of people that can fit in your kitchen. I will provide supplies and support. I just can’t host more than one event a month at my house (that’s the agreement I have with my husband). Let me know if you can help, or if you have a suggestion for some other (free or extremely cheap) place we could use.

Hope to see you all soon!

June 24, 2013 - Future of the Co-op

This Thursday is the last weekly pickup for the Melody Lane Co-op.
Go to The Market to place your order by 7:00pm Tuesday.

CO-OP NEWS

I know you are all wondering about the future of the Melody Lane Co-op. As I announced a couple of weeks ago, I cannot continue hosting the co-op pick up at my house every week. For the sake of my family I needed to scale back on my co-op activities but there was also something else in the works. Now I can finally fill you in on all in on the details…

I am happy to announce that I am the new chapter leader for the North Fulton County chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation. We will have monthly meetings with topics that relate to traditional, nutrient-dense foods and the work of Dr. Weston A Price. I have decided to continue coordinating group orders for some of the harder to find items through the Melody Lane Co-op website with pick up being only once a month in conjunction with our Weston A. Price chapter meeting. The Q’s and A’s section of the co-op website has been updated with the specific details.

Our first meeting is Saturday, July 13th at 7:00pm at my home in Roswell. The topic is Raw Milk. I hope you will be able to join us. You can find out more and RSVP at the Atlanta Real Food Meetup Group.

I realize that once a month is not going to be enough to cover all of your food needs. Fortunately, we are blessed with many options for fresh, locally grown food in our area. Below you will find a list of local resources.

Carlton Farm
You can buy raw milk, cheese, eggs, meat, vegetables, and more directly from Carlton Farm. They have several drop off locations around Greater Atlanta.
www.carltonfarm.com

Deerfield Co-op
This is a brand new co-op, similar to the Melody Lane Co-op. In fact, one of our vendors – BeeBerry Farm (eggs, honey, berries, soaps) is now selling through the Deerfield Co-op. Their pick up is Wednesday afternoons.
http://alpharetta.locallygrown.net/weblog

Natures Garden Delivered
Get organic fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and more delivered right to your front door. What could be more convenient than that??
http://ga.naturesgardendelivered.com

Local Food Stop
Fresh, locally grown vegetables delivered to several drop off locations around this area.
www.localfoodstop.com

There are several traditional farmers’ markets around:
Farmers’ Market at Sweet Apple Village (Roswell/Alpharetta, Thursday afternoons)
Riverside Farmers’ Market (Roswell, Saturday morning)
Alpharetta Farmers’ Market (Saturday morning)
Marietta Square Farmers’ Market (Saturday and Sunday)

As well as other virtual farmers’ markets on the Locally Grown network. Some of these markets may be a little out of your normal driving range, but they are well worth the drive. They work just like the Melody Lane Co-op, order online and then pick up your order at the designated pick up time and place.
Cumming Harvesthttp://cumming.locallygrown.net
Suwanee Whole Life Co-ophttp://suwanee.locallygrown.net
Joyful Noise Acres Farmhttp://jnafarm.locallygrown.net
Heirloom Living Markethttp://lilburn.locallygrown.net
Gwinnett Locally Grownhttp://gwinnett.locallygrown.net

I am sure there is someone I missed. In case the above information is not enough, Local Harvest is a great website to find local farms, farmers markets, and events. http://www.localharvest.org/

Thank you all for your encouraging words and continued support! I am looking forward to what the future holds.
